The BrOpen Rules of Play
The tournament is a 2-day event. Each team consists of 4 golfers playing two rounds of 2-man scramble. Each player will hit a tee shot. The pairing will select the best shot of the 2, place their balls within a club length not closer to the hole, and proceed to play the best ball of the two for each shot through the completion of the hole.
Each pairing ordinarily consists of 2 golfers. In the event that one player cannot start and or finish the round, a single player can elect to play the round by himself. He will be entitled to two attempts at every shot, including putts. If handicaps are involved, he will be handicapped as if he is playing with another golfer of equal caliber.
Play from the designated tees for the day, which will be announced on the first hole if not before. In past years, we have played the second or third tees from the back to facilitate lower scores and more exciting play.
Teams are asked to keep their scores live/updated after each hole on the app (thebropen.com). Each pairing will also be required to submit a signed official scorecard that includes hole-by-hole scores for both the pairing and their opponent. Scores in the app will be checked with the paper scorecard and adjusted if incorrect.
Each pairing must turn in a completed score card to the Official Scorekeeper at the end of each round or the team may be disqualified.
Team handicaps are determined by the Competition Committee using the USGA standard calculations. More details can be found here.
If pairings are changed or players are substituted after play begins, the team's handicap will need to be recalculated by the Competition Committee. This may require adding or substracting strokes from the team in question's total score. The preference is thus for pairings to be locked well in advance of the start of play to avoid this scenario. The Competition Committee will accommodate exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Mulligans are strictly not allowed.
Putt everything out - there are no gimmies in the BrOpen.
Out of Bounds shots shall be treated as lateral water hazards: a penalty shot is taken and then play continues with the team taking a drop within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the out-of-bounds line.
Since the format is a scramble, all shots shall be clean-and-place; i.e. you may place the ball down within a club-length of where the original ball lay and no nearer the hole. You may not move your ball out of a hazard (including bunkers), out of the rough, from the fairway or rough to the apron or from the apron to the green.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, the Rules of Golf will govern any areas of disagreement.
The champion of the BrOpen will be crowned as the team with the lowest 36-hole total score (net, including handicaps if they are used) once regulation play has concluded. In the event that 36 holes cannot be completed due to Acts of God or otherwise, the winner will be determined as the team with the lowest 18 hole score. In the event that that does not result in a clear winner, no champion will be crowned.
If the tournament is tied after 36 holes of play has concluded, each team tied at the top of the leaderboard will compete in a sudden death 4-man scramble. All teams tied at the conclusion of regulation play will proceed to the designated tee; a coin flip or other game of chance will determine which team tees off first.
If necessary, the format for any required playoff will be a 4-man scramble. Each player will hit a tee shot and the team will select the best shot of the 4, place their balls within a club length not closer to the hole, and proceed to play through the completion of the hole. All 4 golfers must compete in the playoff. In the event that one or more players on a team is not able to continue, a substitute will not be allowed and the team must compete with less than 4 golfers.
If a winner cannot be determined after a single hole, play will proceed to the following hole and so on until a winner can be determined. The playoff will occur immediately following the conclusion of play, provided sufficient light and an amenable course.
In the event that darkness, weather, or an uncooperative course manager prevents the playoff from being completed on the same day as the conclusion of regulation, tee times will be reserved on Sunday and play will continue then with the same format until a winner can be determined. If this is not possible, the Competition Committee will convene and determine an appropriate competition for determining the winner.
